On the Psycholinguistic Assessment of Relative Language Strength in Bilinguals: Evidence from Korean Heritage Speakers

چکیده
Language loss is a pressing concern for many of the world's languages. A major obstacle to the early diagnosis of language loss and to the assessment of language maintenance efforts is the absence of an easy-to-use psycholinguistic measure of language strength. We have developed a series of simple psycholinguistic tasks that exploit the fact that the relative strength of two languages is reflected in the speed with which their words and structure-building routines are accessed in the course of speech. Test results can therefore be used to assess language attrition and revitalization in bilingual communities of many different types.

Speech Production and Perception of Heritage Speakers of Korean A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction ! of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Linguistics
Childhood exposure to heritage language has been found to be beneficial when relearning the language as an adult. However, it is not known whether the exposure to heritage language affects the dominant language of the heritage speaker. This study investigates if there is any influence of heritage language (i.e., Korean) on the dominant language (i.e., English) of second-generation Korean-Americ...
متن کاملIslands and Non-islands in Native and Heritage Korean
To a large extent, island phenomena are cross-linguistically invariable, but English and Korean present some striking differences in this domain. English has wh-movement and Korean does not, and while both languages show sensitivity to wh-islands, only English has island effects for adjunct clauses. Given this complex set of differences, one might expect Korean/English bilinguals, and especiall...
متن کاملBilingual children and adult heritage speakers: The range of comparison
This paper compares the language of child bilinguals and adult unbalanced bilinguals (heritage speakers) against that of bilingual native speakers of their home language (baseline). We identify four major vectors of correspondence across the language spoken by these three groups. First, all varieties may represent a given linguistic property in a similar way (child bilinguals = adult heritage s...
متن کاملCollocational Processing in Two Languages: A psycholinguistic comparison of monolinguals and bilinguals
With the renewed interest in the field of second language learning for the knowledge of collocating words, research findings in favour of holistic processing of formulaic language could support the idea that these language units facilitate efficient language processing. This study investigated the difference between processing of a first language (L1) and a second language (L2) of congruent col...
متن کاملResearching (Non) Fluent L2 Speakers’ Oral Communication Deficiencies: A Psycholinguistic Perspective
Fluency in a second language (L2) involves a quintessentially cognitive processing system that operates quickly and effectively. The perceived importance of researching fluency through a psycholinguistic lens has motivated the related L2 research to resort to current cognitive speaking-specific models. This study, drawing on Levelt’s (1999a) psycholinguistic model, probed the deficiency sources...
